Tips on How to File a Business License in Nevada

On Behalf of | Jul 29, 2016 | Business Law

Filing for a Nevada business license

If you are a new business owner in Nevada, you probably cannot wait to open your doors and start making money, but there are a few things to consider first. Nevada law requires that most businesses have a state license. You can file the paperwork yourself, but many experienced entrepreneurs choose to work with a Nevada business license lawyer.

Who Needs to File?

The first thing you need to determine is if your business needs a license. Most businesses are required to have one, but there are a few exceptions. Nonprofits, home businesses, movie companies, insurance agencies and rental property owners are usually not required to have state business licenses. Also, there are higher licensing fees for some types of businesses such as corporations. If you are unsure about whether you need a license or about your licensing fees, it is best to consult with an experienced corporate attorney.

Renewal Period

Once you have filed your application and received your license, you still have to remember to renew your license annually. You should receive a reminder in the mail, but just in case, your license is due on the last day of the month in which you first filed. For example if you received your license in June 2015, your renewal is due on June 30, 2016.

Consult an Attorney

A relationship with a good corporate lawyer is also beneficial to new business owners. Not only are they able to help with the paperwork for a business license, but they can also assist your company in a wide variety of areas like helping with establishing corporations or partnerships, preparing contracts and working to protect your business against unnecessary litigation.
